and in the end it doesn't even matter | A steady rain pounded the ruined city of Seattle. A solitary, dark haired figure huddled out of the wet in the burned out shell of a building. A solitary, sunken looking eye peered out from beneath dampened bangs, the other covered by a fall of hair and clinging shadows. She looked tired. She looked half-starved. She felt so much worse than that. Hunger clawed at her decaying body; exhaustion dragged at her limbs and burned her eyes. She was always tired; always hungry. But even stronger than that however, was the sullen anger that constantly underlay every moment of what passed for her life these days.
Her eyes focused on nothing, staring blankly at the falling rain outside the gaping maw of the ruined door. The girl that had once been Anise Anderson was no more, but who she was was still unknown. Was she any more than a phantom? No, she was just a whisper in the dark.
A scowl knit her features and she closed her eyes. Then, suddenly, her eyes shot open and she leapt to her feet, hand going for the pilfered knife at her hip. "Who's there?" she snapped, eyes searching the rain-soaked night for the source of the sound she had just heard. |

[attr="class","top"] brutality hatred destruction curiosity [attr="class","one"] [attr="class","tbody"]Ravage watched as three of his minions surged forward. Gun shots rang through the air, but that meant nothing to his kind. They leaped onto the drifters back and he went down with a scream. And his minions began to devour him. Ravage watched, learning and experiencing. It was still an odd sensation. He could feel the hundreds around him, prowling, seeking, HUNGERING. They would have to be content with the scraps they found. It was odd because he did not feel the same hunger they felt. They had a constant need to feed, to attack, to kill. Ravage felt the same instincts within him, gnawing at the corners of his mind. They were always there, trying to force him into more violent urges.
But he was different now. He was...changing.
The change had started long before this rainy day. It had begun with him learning that he could not be killed by what humanity believed as lethal. And his learning did not stop. Ravage was always learning, growing, adapting. And so, he did not give into those urges. He simply watched. Waiting for them to be finished. Waiting for them to return to him with the desire to obey. And suddenly he felt it. One of his kind. He called to it with whatever sensation he used to control the rest of his mindless violent slaves. It didn't even feel like his intended target noticed him. Curiosity blossomed within him. His senses turned him to the right down an alleyway. Ravage walked.
He stopped in front of a doorway only to be confronted to him by a small thing. It pointed a sharp object at her with fear but determination glaring at her. "Who's there?" it cried. Ravage turned his head in puzzlement. It was different from the rest... almost... incomplete. And it was human. His first instinct was to lash out. He hissed and raised his hands, intending to go for the throat. The urge was immediately stamped out and he froze. He tilted his head, curiosity plain on his face through the rain.
"WhY DO i FEeL yoU?" his voice came out hoarsely. He continued forward, but no longer hostile, just curious. "HUmaN? uS? WHat ARe YoU?"

and in the end it doesn't even matter | Anise was still new to this strange half-life. Her otherwise senses were still developing and her mind was still quite human, raging emotions and unending hunger aside. So when she saw the figure moving through the veil of rain resolve into what was clearly an Echo, she felt a sudden surge of panic, before laughter bubbled up inside her and spilled out of her lips, incongruous to the blade she held steadily in front of her.
So a monster faced her, spoke to her with ravaged vocal chords. What was she now, but one more monster, albeit a young one. What did she have to fear besides death, and why should she fear death when she had already planned her own out? The laughter faded, the steady sound of the rain once more the dominant sound in the ruined building.
She let the hand holding the knife fall to her side as she appraised the monster before her. She didn't have much experience with echos aside from the ones that had infected her. She had changed since that night, and in more ways than one. She had changed enough to stare a true monster in the eyes without flinching, that was for sure.
Meeting the man-monster's gaze she replied, "Not human. Not anymore. What does it matter to you, anyway?" Bitterness seeped into her voice like cold water and her hollow features twisted into a scowl. |

[attr="class","top"] brutality hatred destruction curiosity [attr="class","one"] [attr="class","tbody"]Ravage watched curiously as it held the weapon to him. Did it not realize who he was? Ravage was not someone you could just kill. He had learned that early on. Practical invincibility made him almost unaware of most danger. The echo snorted as it began to feel more confident. He didn't know how he knew that, but he did. Confidence meant underestimation. Underestimation meant the enemy's guard drop. And this thing still had the stench of human on it. It reeked of it, and it was taking an extra effort for Ravage not to immediately rip it apart. He had a different urge now, one far more compelling.
He stepped up to it very closely and moved his face close to hers. Then he tilted his head and began to sniff. "YOu smELl liKE huMan..." he replied, confused as to why he was smelling human in the first place. He could feel it, whatever it was within another person. It smelled like Ravage, but no where near as strong. It indeed did smell incomplete. "YoU Are uS... BUt noT YeT," he concluded. Ravage's understanding began to increase. It had always been odd to him, how others that smelled like him could not be controlled. A few of the mindless infected raced around the corner towards Ravage. He would have to watch this one carefully. If it did become like him, he wanted to know how. He wanted to know how to make something as strong as he was. He wanted to make something that could crush the humans once and for all.
"COme," he barked towards the thing cowering so blatantly from the rain. Foolish. It was rain. Rain was not something to hide from. It shielded his smell and hid him from unsuspecting rain. Maybe he could teach it to be more like him. A hunter. A predator. The two infected awaited it to move. Just as Ravage was about to bark the order again, a crash of rocks burst from the building across from where it hid. Another mindless infected, not under Ravage's command. He had been too distracted to notice it coming. It was a rather large brute, standing a good foot over him, and muscles bulging. It surged towards Ravage.
Ravage almost seemed to smile as his fist slammed into the charging infected's face. "YOU. FOLLOW. ME," he shouted. His will slammed against the infected's... whatever it was and the infected rose to his feet and stood motionless. Ravage turned back to it, staring right at it. "COME!" he shouted again and continued to walk through the rain.

and in the end it doesn't even matter | No, Anise had no idea who this echo was. He, for she was fairly sure he was male, was just one more monster in the night. He was powerful, he was sentient, but he was just one more monster in the end. She wasn't overconfident. She was sure he could easily rip her apart. But the sullen embers of fratricidal rage burned in her belly, banishing such things as fear. His presence, and the lingering presence of what she could only guess were his minions outside, made her uncomfortable. His smell, for she could smell him clearly, was strange and unpleasant to her, her nose unused to such things.
As he leaned in closer, sniffing at her, she leaned back, a look of disgust twisting her features. Close, the smell was overwhelming. Her lip curled and her eyes narrowed at the monster's assessment of her scent. A thin, razor sharp smile slid onto her face and she raised one eyebrow. "That's right," she said, condescension thick in her voice. "I'm turning into one of you, monster. Very clever of you to see it." Not that she had any plans of lasting that long. She wasn't sure how long it would take for her body to finish dying, but she wanted no part of an endless half-life. She only wanted justice, vengeance. And she would bide her time until she could unleash that justice on Saine's head. She had trusted him.
Her gaze sharpened and the smile fell from her lips at the echo's order to her. Come? Who did he think he was? "No." The single word was delivered flatly but with utter conviction. "No, I will not follow you." Anise crossed her arms, knife still held loosely in her right hand.
She was startled out of her defiant stance when the wall across the way burst into rubble and a mindless hulk of an echo emerged. She sunk into a crouch, knife at the ready, but the speaking echo took care of things neatly. She shivered in spite of herself as he impressed his will upon the raving beast. Was that what she could look forward to? She shuddered again and straightened. She'd die first. |

[attr="class","top"] brutality hatred destruction curiosity [attr="class","one"] [attr="class","tbody"]Ravage tilted his head in curiosity as it stood motionless. Rain poured around him as he began taking slow steps towards it. This was the first time something had not followed an order ravage had given it. Why had it not followed? Did it not want to kill like he did? That urge sat within him like the gnawing hunger. To destroy, to defile, to crush everything around him. It wasn't something he suspected other things felt. It made ravage stronger. Yes... strong as anything he could think of at that moment.
So as it refused to follow him, ravage began to feel an emotion he vaguely recognized as anger. When rage or anger stirred within him he usually gave into his primal instincts. It made him feel almost unbearably hot. As if fire burned within his chest. That fire was easily quenched by killing humans. This time, however, his anger made him feel a sense of cold. "nO?" he whispered into the beating rain. "NO?!" He stalked forward. "ofFER FoOD! ofFFER SAFETY. OFFER DEATH. OFFER. OFFER. NO!?" He bowed his head. "No." He turned away from it. The hulking beast stepped up to ravage, placated. "feTCh."
The mindless beast turned... and roared in its direction. Ravage was not done examining it. It was new, and different. He wanted to watch its change. He wanted to know how it became like them. If he could make more like him, control infected like him, he could crush the humans once and for all. He WOULD learn what it was. The hulking monster surged forward and crashed into the building that it had been hiding in. Ravage did not watch. The infected would do their job. And it would follow him. It had no say or choice in the matter. Ravage would learn to control it and then he would send it to kill indefinitely. Just like they all should. Just like ravage would.
Just like it was supposed to be.

and in the end it doesn't even matter | Anise wanted to kill alright, but she wasn't in it for mindless violence. She had a particular target in mind and would kill whoever she needed to in order to get to him. So far, however, she hadn't made much progress getting close enough to Saine to put him in the ground. She would, though. She'd manage it, no matter what it took. She rather doubted this particular monster would help her with that. He seemed more the type to just kill everything.
"No," she repeated, standing her ground as he stalked back towards her. Her brows furrowed as he listed the supposed perks of following him. "I can't eat, you idiot," she snapped. "I don't work anymore. I'm a broken thing." She shook her head. "And I don't want your safety," she spat. Her arms uncrossed, hands dropping to her sides as she gripped the knife a little tighter.
Anise relaxed only a fraction as the echo turned away. She didn't trust it, but hoped it had lost interest in her. Unfortunately, the next thing he said was "fetch" and by the time she realized he hadn't been addressing her, it was too late. The hulking mass of savage echo he had just subdued came crashing in and it took all her effort just to get out of the way.
The whisper let out a strangled shout, ducking and weaving away from the mindless echo, avoiding it as much as the debris it was producing. She spotted a broken window and bolted towards it. |
