Bethany was born the youngest of three in the slums of the Dome. Neither parent served in the military, and they struggled by. Her older siblings were twins, a brother and a sister, and her relationship with them was among the most important things she had. She was much closer with her sister Anise than with her brother, but she merely thought big brothers were supposed to be a little distant.

So it was that she spent her childhood being doted on by her sister who would share food with her and always look out for her. But then the sickness came. Beth and both of her parents fell ill with a disease that was sweeping through the slums, one that would take the lives of both her mother and father. Beth survived, but barely, and was always much more frail. Whatever the disease had done, it had left her weak enough that ordinary chores would be a struggle to complete and made it difficult for her to stand for too long or be very active.

Her sister became even more protective of her, while making plans of some kind with her brother. It was some time before Beth discovered that her siblings were making plans to escape the Dome altogether and join the Rebellion. In full honesty, Beth was terrified by the idea of leaving the safety of the Dome, much as she hated the slums.

But when the time came to carry out the plan and escape, Beth wasn't able to keep up. She collapsed before she could reach the meeting point, and was found by soldiers who took her back into the Dome. Beth never heard anything about her brother and sister and so thought both her siblings made it to the Rebellion.

Soldiers raided the house she'd lived in and took or destroyed everything. Everything except one picture of the family. Beth managed to hide the picture and save it, the only thing remaining from her family. Moving into a smaller apartment, she took a job as a maid in the military's office to keep herself afloat, though her limited rations and low pay meant she sometimes had to go without food...
