SURIAH L. OPELA

No one ever said that life as a drifter was an easy one; or a safe one.  That is a fact that Suriah knows all too well.  She was scarcely more than a babe in the arms when a pack of echos overran her parents' small drifter caravan.  Knocked unconscious and hidden under some debris, it's a miracle that she even survived the slaughter.  Luckily she was discovered by another group of drifters before she succumbed to the harsh elements. 

Begrudgingly, she was taken in by the group of drifters at the insistence of the leader's younger brother.  Suriah was tolerated at best by most, but she was mostly treated as she was viewed: as a burden.  She was too young to be much use, but used up precious resources.  When her one protector died of an infection things only got worse for her. 

Irritation-colored apathy quickly turned to animosity and before long Suri was the group's universal scapegoat.  Finally she could stand it no more.  She was ten or eleven when she ran off in the night, desperate to get away from the casually negligent abuse.  But she left the frying pan for the fire itself.  She narrowly avoided being eaten by echos by burying herself in the desert sands a few times, scarcely breathing. 

It was after one such event that another set of drifters found her shaking sand out of her snarled hair.  The leader took a liking to her and decided to take her in.  For once in her life she felt safe, but it wasn't to last.

In the end, the man was only grooming her, something that took a full year to come to fruition.  The things he did to her were unspeakable but it wasn't until he carved a strip of flesh from her leg, and branded his name into her forearm, that she simply couldn't take any more.  She bound her own wounds and escaped into the night once more, this time making straight for the Dome.  She'd already seen Hell in the eyes of a man she'd trusted.  The Dome and it's laws could only be an improvement.
