The slums were not a place that would think of as comfortable. Certainly nobody who lived in the fancy apartments who held the nice cushy jobs within the military would think of it like that. But, for people like Naoko Thunder-Star, even those in the slums could afford certain amenities. Since she had transitioned into a leadership role, Naoko had been hard at work maintaining the network of contacts that had ensured the success of her predecessors.
It was a good thing that Naoko knew the ins and outs of the smuggling operation. Everything had gone smoothly, even with a competitor operating within the dome and the military always looking to crack down on "free enterprise". Besides, if it wasn't for the demand created by the strict rationing, she wouldn't have nearly the demand for business. So, really, it was their own fault.
The upside to living down in the tunnels was very simple. You could do what you wanted with your own space. And Noako's space was outfitted in a very comfortable fashion. A nice bed, dressers filled with clothes. Old signs decorated the walls and she even had a selection of old books lining some shelves she had put up on the walls. Sure, there was no sunlight coming in to greet her in the morning, but it wasn't like the dome offered her a whole lot of spectacular views, either.
As she got ready for the day, Naoko hummed to herself. Today was going to be a good day. A nice shipment was coming in and she had a deal already lined up. More product meant more money. And one of her customers would be providing a nice little extra spending money for her own operation. She left her (not so) humble little hovel and made her way to the drop off point. First thing's first, Naoko was going to make herself a little bit of cash. The shipment wouldn't be until later.
Navigating the tunnels was no easy task, for the uninitiated. But, Naoko had grown up traveling through the maze that lay below the dome. When she returned to street level, Naoko walked through the dirty streets. The meeting place was a broken down old building that attempted to pass itself off as a diner. Not that there was much on the menu. A few customers sat at a counter, while Naoko slid into a booth and waited.
